Saw my first movie of the year.

I had participated in the ARG a bit for Cloverfield, but it got too hard to follow (and too much that wasn't actually part of the game seemed to be for a bit).  So I knew a bit about the movie before seeing it.

IIf you ever find yourself in the wreckage of a city with a monster still rampaging, and you are in high heels, find some walking shoes.  Seriously.  And if you are going to loot cell phone batteries - if a monster is rampaging at night, grab some flash lights, too, 'kay?

Oh, and I have been in those subways.  There are 'smash glass if emergency' boxes in the wall - with axes, flashlights and first aid kits.  I kinda think a monster rampaging through Manhattan with being trapped in the subway under it  an 'emergency'.  Smash glass, get weapon, get first aid kit, and get flash light.  Especially before going INTO the tunnels.

And when you finally get a hold of a crowbar AFTER fighting the speedy little monsters that bite, KEEP IT!  Seriously.   Crowbars are much better than hands when beating a monster off your comrade.

And I do blame HUD for Marlena's death, actually.  He saw the little monsters fall off the creature, attack the military with some effectiveness... so when the rats in the tunnel are running scared, trying to figure out what they are running from is grounds for being eaten first.  Run, then try to figure out what you are running from if you are unarmed.  Humans are soft and squishy without tools.

One of the people I saw it with thought that it was unrealistic for no one to just stop Rob from going back into the city.  I was the of the feeling that Marlena had been in shock since the very first monster attack, Lily had just seen her lover die, and Hud was just kinda not that guy.  He was kinda useless in real life, he wasn't the sort to step up and take charge during a disaster.

The monster looked unique.  That was a bonus.  I don't think it was reptilian - it looked kinda squidish until you saw it's face and body at the very end - then it just looked alien.  But it was definitely not a godzilla.

I liked it, I did.  I think its the only 'everyone dies' movie I have seen in a bit that I have liked.

I thought it was great for the limited processing speed while in shock. He didn't get a flashlight because he wasn't thinking about getting stuff for the trip. He was thinking about how to get his phone working. There was no breathing space for thinking between achieving that and moving to the next task of getting to the apartment. The end is the first moment where they stop and think long enough to come up with anything more impressive than the really somewhat obvious idea of using the subway tunnels.

Hud totally hadn't had time to process the little monsters, which had not been discussed by anyone since that moment, all discussion being about the big thing. His thoughts were either about that, or about Marlena, possibly as a defense mechanism after his best friend died.
